FAQs

What patients are asking about Imaging

Bone density (DXA)

This procedure is used to determine the quality of bones as you age.

Computed Tomography (CT) Scans

CT scans take multiple pictures or very thin “slices” through the body rapidly, allowing the radiologist to see bone, tissue or organs in great detail.

X-ray (diagnostic imaging)

We can use conventional x-rays on all areas of the body. Providers can assess bone fractures, arthritis and even some types of cancer using x-ray imaging.

Digital mammography

Mammography is used to screen women for signs of breast cancer. Mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early. We can perform a mammogram without a written order.

Fluoroscopy

We sometimes describe these exams as x-rays in motion. This type of imaging is used to evaluate upper or lower GI tract issues or guide joint injections.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

An MRI uses a powerful magnetic field to generate images. It does not use radiation. We use MRI exams while imaging the brain, the musculoskeletal system and cardiovascular systems and sometimes cancer areas.

Nuclear medicine

During a nuclear medicine exam, small amounts of radioactive materials are injected into a vein, swallowed, or inhaled as a gas. These materials work with a camera to produce detailed pictures of both the structure and function of organs and tissues.

PET (positron emission tomography) scan

During a PET scan, a radioactive tracer is injected into a vein. This specialized tracer will allow the doctor to determine what areas of the body are active or hyperactive. Areas of high chemical activity in your body will show up as bright spots on the PET scan. PET scans can also measure blood flow, oxygen use, how your body uses sugar, and more.

Ultrasound

High-frequency sound waves are used during an ultrasound examination. This exam produces precise images of structures within your body. We use ultrasound to examine abdominal organs, thyroid, heart, and blood vessels, as well as to evaluate unborn babies.
