Meet Airway Larry, Welia Health’s newest training manikin

June 20, 2023  /   Press Releases  /   2-minute read

Exciting announcement from Welia Health’s Emergency Department

We are thrilled to share that thanks to the generous funds provided by the dedicated volunteers at Welia Health, our emergency medical education team has received a Simulaids® Critical Airway Management training manikin.

This incredible addition will significantly enhance the vital skills of our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and ED providers. The model is less expensive, mobile and certainly more modern than Resusci Anne, who for years was considered the gold standard for years in CPR training.

The new training manikin, equipped with an enlarged tongue, a small mouth opening, a blocked airway, a lockjaw, and immobile head features, enables health professionals to practice complex airway management and intubation processes. It also is a realistic, durable product with increased functionality while ensuring sustainability through using unique self-healing materials for reusability. All features are designed to allow for authentic responses and hands-on skills.

Using advanced technology and education through simulation better prepares EMS personnel’s response to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) events. In Minnesota, these account for 20% of all deaths and are the second-leading cause (of death).

“We are proud to be at the forefront of medical education, equipped with cutting-edge resources to meet the evolving needs of our community,” says Sarah Holmgren, Welia Health’s emergency services director. “This is just one step in our continuous journey to continue to provide exceptional emergency care.”

The volunteer group at Welia Health

We are deeply grateful for our volunteers’ immeasurable impact since their inception in 2008. The volunteer team of over 50 strong exemplifies the true spirit of compassion and community service by generously sharing their time and talents by supporting our patients, staff and communities. From managing the gift shop and staffing the welcome desk to providing general assistance and comfort to our patients, the volunteers play an integral role in enhancing the overall experience at Welia Health. The gift shop proceeds, fundraisers, and donations make these types of items or events possible.

Since 2008, the group has worked an astonishing 34,000 hours resulting in awards totaling $109,600 in medical equipment and scholarships for local high school and non-traditional students.

The volunteer group continually looks to invite others to join the dedicated group of men and women making a significant difference in our patients’ lives and communities. If you would like more information on how to get involved, please get in touch with Jody, Volunteer Coordinator at 320.225.3616, read more about volunteer opportunities, or reach out to any Welia Health volunteer.
